Authors Instructions
Journal of Hydraulic Research

GENERAL
The Journal of Hydraulic Research JHR accepts papers relating to hydraulic engineering and hydraulic research. The basic requirements for paper acceptance are:

  1. Work has not been published in another Journal. It should be clearly indicated in the paper submission when a work was previously declined by another journal.
  2. Papers accepted for publication in the JHR need a copyright transfer agreement signed by the principal author. This agreement will be sent together with the first typeset proof of the paper by the Editorial Office.
  3. Papers must be submitted using the JHR on-line system at http://www.journalhydraulicresearch.com/. The submission format must be a pdf word-file for review purposes, and a word file for editing the accepted paper.
  4. All papers submitted should be prepared double-spaced.

Favored areas for papers include:

  1. State-of-the-art papers in a particular research area of the IAHR community, with suggestions for future research directions,
  2. Technical Papers different from the traditional areas and approaches of hydraulic engineering and research including hydrodynamics, fluvial hydraulics, water resources, maritime hydraulics, ecohydraulics, groundwater, environmental and industrial flows, and hydraulic structures,
  3. Technical Notes with a maximum of 4 typeset pages in the JHR, presenting novel ideas for which the paper format is too long,
  4. Educational and Forum articles to promote novel experiences in teaching hydraulics, and to highlight historical issues of hydraulic research or actualities in water related science and technologies,
  5. Case studies with a general approach that may be instrumental and descriptive for the solution of similar hydraulic works,
  6. Discussions to the previous articles, limited to a maximum of 2 printed journal pages.

All these submissions are subject to a peer review process.

PAPER SUBMISSION
Submissions for the JHR should be written in English. French may exceptionally be used provided the Editorial Office is contacted prior to submission, along with the Abstract. Papers should be well written; works with an insufficient language quality are returned by the Editor to the Author(s) prior to the review process.

A PDF-file of the full paper should be submitted electronically on-line. PDF-files should not exceed 10MB. Figures should be incorporated in the text at an approporiate resolution to ensure readability and compact size. Authors of papers which are accepted will be requested to submit higher resolution figures. Graphical and photographical artwork is accepted in grey-scales with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. Lettering should be sufficiently large. Papers containing figures of poor quality will be returned to the Author(s) prior to the review process.

PAPER CONTENT
All works submitted to the Editorial Office include:

  1. Title of maximum 70 symbols including spaces (1 line in journal)
  2. Author(s) name(s) and full address(es), plus e-mail address(es)
  3. A minimum of 5 keywords
  4. Abstract of some 150 words
  5. Introduction
  6. Main text
  7. Conclusions
  8. References
  9. Notation
  10. Tables
  11. Figure captions (on separate page)
  12. Author(s) portrait(s) are welcomed

The paper should have a maximum of 8 printed journal pages (10 pages for IAHR members). Shorter articles of significance are given preference. Papers accepted for publication which are overlength will be subject to an excess page charge of 100€ per page.

REVIEW PROCESS
The Editor distributes papers that satisfy the Authors’ Guidelines to Associate Editors, or directly to three reviewers. Their evaluation is the basis of the final decision whether a work is further considered for publication, or if it is declined. Each paper is rated from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent). At least two reviewers must express a positive opinion to advance the review process.
Papers should normally be reviewed within 3 months. Each submission to the Editorial Office is acknowledged. All papers are pre-reviewed by the Editor, and those not satisfying the basic requirements returned immediately to the Author(s) for improvement.

PAPER ACCEPTANCE

Once a paper is accepted for publication, the principal Author is asked to submit his final work following the JHR template available from the JHR homepage. In this way the work is essentially completed by the Author such that the publication process is accelerated and complicated proof reading is avoided. A final check by the Editor excludes manipulations by the Author(s). Prior to publication, the Author receives an electronic copy of the final paper, for acceptance provided the Copyright Agreement Transfer Sheet is returned signed.
